What a crazy week! There was a general feeling that a team from Alabama could be upset this week, just not the one that was actually upset. Let’s go through it.
First, what a game on the Bayou! The Crimson Tide looked out of it with 50 seconds to go down by 3 with no timeouts, but one play after another mounted to a 27 yard field goal to send the game into overtime. Both teams played great, but Alabama had the momentum going into the overtime, and that proved to be the deciding factor.
Many thought that would be an upset, but the Auburn Tigers took over that distinction this week losing to the Texas A&M Aggies in grueling fashion. The Tigers would fumble on both of its final two drives in Aggie territory.
TCU got a great win against Kansas State with Trevone Boykin throwing his name week after week into the Heismans Trophy race. Ohio State showed what their young quarterback is made of going into Lansing and beating Michigan State. Arizona State proved to be too much for Notre Dame, after giving up a large lead. Baylor trottled the Oklahoma Sooners. With all these crazy games, the playoff rankings will be shaken up something crazy this week. Here are my predictions for the top 10 in the rankings:
College Football Playoff Rankings for November 9, 2014
- Mississippi State
- Florida State
- Arizona State
- Ohio State
- Ole Miss
I think that TCU should jump Alabama into the fourth slot. It really doesn’t mean much, as next week’s games of Miss State vs Alabama will have playoff implications. A couple weeks ago there were some real thoughts that the SEC could get two teams in, but those chances have greatly diminished barring crazy outcomes (like Auburn and Texas A&M). Arizona state jumps to 6th for me, as they handled Notre Dame. I would argue that they handled them better than Florida State. Arizona State really controls its destiny right now as well. Win out and they should be in. The teams that control their destiny are Miss State, Florida State, Oregon, TCU, Alabama, Arizona State.
Crazyness isn’t over. Remember when LSU snuck into the National Championship with two losses when everyone in front of them just kept losing? This is feeling like one of those years. So what two loss team do I think has the best chance of sneaking into the top 4? Definitely Auburn. I think Ole Miss definitely has the better resume, but the thing in Auburn’s favor is the rest of its schedule. They will play Georgia and Alabama, two games that could very well vault them back into consideration.
